The importance of good documentation

Jul 05 2010

For a long time I’ve thought about developing a facebook application. I’ve bought the books (soon outdated) and I’ve read through the documentation (more outdated then the books) and all I’ve really managed to decipher is that, once you have the knowledge you most likely shouldn’t share it with people starting out. Maybe it’s seen as a right of initiation. You have to decipher the enigma that is the documentation to earn the right to create an app.

I wouldn’t mind if the documentation was perhaps slightly disorganised and maybe a bit here and there was outdated, but it just seems that they rushed up the minimum they could and left it there. To me the examples look massively incomplete and there is almost no support for those who are new to facebook app developlment ( this could include extremely intelligent developers ). You can develop apps for users and apps for pages, yet all the examples seem to be geared towards apps for users, and believe me, it seems like there are differences you need to take into account!

I’m going to persevere and try and develop a page app, along the way I’m going to take notes, work out what works and what doesn’t and hopefully post a tutorial here on exactly what I did, and why it works
